Dirt Cake Tutorial

One of my families favorite desserts is called Dirt Cake.  Its easy enough and more important its delicious, but it is not a diet friendly food.  My children really love it when I dress it up and make it look like a real plant (as shown in the picture). So lets get started.

First gather all of the ingredients, the butter and cream cheese need to be at room temperature. (recipe is at the bottom of the post)

Crumble your oreos and set aside.  I love to use the blender attachment for my Bosch, but if you don't have a blender simply put the oreos in a large Ziploc bag and smash with a rolling pin. (This is especially good on those long days).
In a large bowl cream together the cream cheese, butter and powder sugar, set aside.  In another bowl mix pudding and milk together and add to the butter mixture.Make sure its mixed well and fold in the cool whip. (remember that folding in an ingredient takes patience and time)

Now your ready to combine everything.  You can use a plastic pot made for plants (I use plastic because they are dish washer safe and cheap) or you can use a 9x13 pan.

If you are using a pot start by putting Oreo crumbs in the bottom to help prevent the pudding mixture from dripping down into the holes.  Then alternate between the pudding mixture and Oreo crumbs, making sure that you don't forget the gummy worms and that you end with oreos on top.

One more thing for those of you who want it to look like a plant.  You'll need to go get some silk flowers and trim them up with wire cutters (I have a pair on hand that are mine and are only used for cake decorating and cooking).

You will also need saran wrap to cover the ends of you flowers to prevent your food from being contaminated.

Side note for all of those cake decorators out there: always cover your wires before putting them into cakes!

Now enjoy - and try to not eat too much! =)
